Artist File #5 —–Rebecca Dautremer

Posted on Saturday 16 August 2008

Unless you are familiar with European children book, some of you might not be familiar with Rebecca Dautremer. You don’t see many of her beautiful books in the U.S. but she is one of the most popular illustrators in Europe Today.

The first time I met her book was Enamorados. I found the book in this small children’s book store in Tokyo. Ever since, I fell in love with her work. I looked all over the place for her books in the U.S. but there were very few available.

And when we had our Out of Picture gallery show at Galerie Arludik in Paris, I begged my French illustrator friend Gerald Guerlais, also our Totoro Forest contributor, to somehow invite Rebecca. And that is how I got to become friends with her.

She continues to do her amazing children’s books but also she’s started doing some work for TV shows and animated feature films! She recently launched her amazing website too! As you can see, she is not just an illustrator, but she’s an all round artist you will fall in love with. I promise!

By the way, she emailed me this morning saying she is coming to the event from Paris!!!!

“You can’t imagine first how proud I am to be with these incredible artistswho participated to the totoro project. It was so good to feel that I could be a part of this illustrator team. Ilustration is a very “lonesome job”, and it gives me confidence to feel others all around working for the same good cause.
In this image, I only try to show life and heart in the little girl and the tree, like beating together.” –Rebecca

    Bonjour!
Thank you for your note on Rebecca’s work. She is very talented and very famous on the French market of Children’s books.
I am her agent and I represent her for the american market and I hope she will be successful pretty soon here!
My agency is French Touch Agency. ( http://www.frenchtouchagency.com)
I left messages on Totoro Project but nobody never contacted me or wrote me back…
So may be we could be in touch in the future and you could tell me how I can go to your auction’s event? ( I am living in San Francisco)
    Thank you for help.

I’ve been a Dautremer fan for years, an artist from Montreal first told me about he work and i was immediately enthralled. She is absolutely, without a doubt one of the finest illustrators working in picture books and a huge inspiration.

Rebecca is, indeed, one of our best french illustrator. She brings her visions with her unique style with genuineness. Many young french new illustrators can’t stop copying her (or trying to) but they are just fakes. I invit all artists invited to the event and who love her work to talk to her about her awesome process which is very interesting. Rebecca is also a duper generous soul : I can go to the auction in San Francisco since she generously invited me to join her. I feel very lucky to know her. I wanted to say it especially today because it is her Birthday ;-) Happy Birthday Rebecca. Keep creating.
